Dumpster Weight Calculators for Common Construction Debris

Estimating the weight of your construction and demolition debris is essential to finding the right dumpster for the job. Use our weight calculators to find a dumpster with the right volume and weight capacity for your specific type of debris, including:

  • Concrete
  • Asphalt
  • Roofing Shingles
  • Drywall
  • Plaster
  • Carpet
Why Your Dumpster’s Weight Limit Matters

While your debris may fit within the volume of the container you rent, it is possible for the weight of your debris to exceed the dumpster’s weight limit. For example, a 20 yard dumpster may only be filled halfway with a heavy material, such as concrete or dirt. Exceeding the maximum weight limit may result in additional charges. Therefore, always consider both the type and weight of your materials when choosing a dumpster size.

Concrete & Asphalt Weight Calculator

Concrete and asphalt weights are based on the square footage and thickness of the material. On average, a cubic yard of solid concrete weighs 4,050 pounds (~2 tons), or 150 pounds per cubic foot. Solid asphalt weighs slightly less at 3,960 pounds per cubic yard.

However, broken concrete and asphalt weighs closer to 2,025 pounds (~1 ton) per cubic yard, or 75 pounds per cubic foot, when disposed of in a dumpster due to the amount of empty space. When disposing of either material, use our concrete weight calculator to determine the right dumpster for asphalt and concrete disposal.

Roof Shingle Weight Calculator

A bundle of three-tab asphalt shingles weighs between 60 and 80 pounds, but this may vary depending on the quality and type of shingle. Generally, three bundles of shingles are enough to cover 1 square of roof (100 square feet), which can weigh anywhere from 180 to 240 pounds. Use our shingle weight calculator to see what dumpster size you need for a roof tear-off or removal.

Drywall Weight Calculator

The weight of drywall, sheetrock and plaster can be calculated using the square footage of debris and the thickness of the material. A single sheet of 4 foot by 8 foot, ½-inch thick drywall weighs close to 50 pounds. Use our drywall weight calculator below to estimate the weight of your drywall and determine the right size dumpster for your job.
